The events of 1989/1990 have earned a permanent place in the national memory as great moments in German history. Above all, the memorial is intended to honor the civic courage and civil courage of the GDR citizens who took to the streets in the fall of 1989 to stand up for political reform and freedom.
As a sign of pride and joy at having overcome dictatorship and restored German unity, the monument is intended not only to commemorate this milestone in the history of German democracy, but also to encourage people to continue the democratic awakening, to consolidate democracy and unity.
It stands for freedom and unity, which is symbolized by the two core sentences of the Peaceful Revolution: We are the people – We are one people.
